Today, we'll look at the steps needed to create an E-Book. Do you know what an ebook is? An
electronic book! A book that you can read online or on other devices like Amazon's Kindle. We love
books in general and books are proven products that have been around for pretty much the
beginning of time. They're proven to sell people who love reading and buying books in digital and
physical format and they're going to be around forever.
Books are a great way to build relationships and trust between you and the reader. When someone reads your entire book, they look at you as being on a different level; as the authority in a certain area. Of course, that if your book is good. If you have specialized expertise or knowledge or skill sets to share that can help people improve their life or their business in a meaningful way, then you're ready to write and create your own E-Book!
Now, let's get into the steps you would need to take to finally create your very own e-book today!
Step 1
Outline The Content Of Your Book
Begin with a one-line idea. Write one sentence to summarize your book’s “big picture” idea. Although it sounds easy, summarizing the whole of your book in one single sentence can force you to strip away your ideas into one essential premise. When starting your outline, it's best to find the 5 W's & H.
- What? What is the concept, topic, or idea?
- Where? Where does this concept, topic, or idea, apply? Maybe it’s an event or a context situation.
- Why? Why does this matter?
- Who? Who is this for, or who is involved?
- When? Is there a concept of time involved?
- How? If applicable, ask yourself how will this happen?
These basic questions will help you build your story and help you to write a more cohesive book. Your ideas will flow automatically.
After you have answered the questions above and brainstormed your ideas, now you should organize your book with specifics like the main points that you want your reader to know.
Step 2
Set A Daily Writing Goal For Your E-Book Content.
This process is relative as your daily writing goal for your e-book may be slower or faster based on your experience with writing and the time you may have. If you're a new writer, set a goal for 200 or 300 words per session or day. Alternatively, if you are a more developed writer and have a writing routine, set yourself a writing goal of producing 1,000 or 2,000-words each day.
You can make this process even faster by using speech-to-text software available in free or paid options. Let's give you a list of speech-to-text options that you can choose from:
- Using Your Very Own Smartphone. You can download free and paid Notepad apps on both your Android & IOS devices. Using your built-in microphone, you can then record yourself speaking and let your app do the typing for you. Even better. Grab a more professional-sounding USB microphone that can catch your voice even better than your smartphone. Our favorite that works with both Android & IOS smartphones is the Blue Yeti Nano USB microphone with a USB to USB-C adapter for Android or a USB to Lightning adapter for IOS.
- Using Dictation.io. Dictation IO is a free website where you can use your computer's microphone to record every word that you say. You might want to pronounce accurately as this website is very sensitive when it comes to speech.
- Nuance Dragon Home. With Dragon, you get 99% voice recognition out-of-the-box, and it even improves over time because of fancy algorithms. For Desktop, it's only compatible with Windows, but they do provide an option for mobile that is compatible with both Android & IOS.
- Otter. AI. Otter is powered by Ambient Voice Intelligence which forever learns the way that you talk for 99% voice recognition and accuracy. There is a free plan that allows 600 minutes of dictation per month and a premium plan that extends dication time to 6,000 minutes per month with a per-user cost of $9 per month.
Step 3
Write/ Record Until The First Draft Is Done.
Use the options listed above to write or record the first draft of your e-book. The first draft will allow you to go back and edit, add and delete anything you feel needs changing, and allow you to read the book for yourself to make sure that it is an entertaining read for your new readers.
Don't try and rush through the process of creating your book, but please plan a scheduled time to get the first draft done. This allows you enough time to go back and perfect it, which leads to the next step.
Step 4
Add Some Spice To Your E-Book.
This is the time you will take to proofread your first draft and make sure that every word is correct and everything to your liking. You can now go about adding the summaries for each chapter, add a checklist (if your book requires it), find quotes that will glue your story together, add other stories from other people (giving credit btw)to fill your content up, and find images that will keep your reader captivated.
Remember, with an e-book, you can do as much or as little as you would like, but just keep it interesting enough for your reader to want to buy it again if they would like.
Step 5
Freelance or Hire Someone To Design Your Book Cover.
Yes. E-Book still needs book covers. It may seem like another hassle that you will have to put up with, especially if you don't have any experience with graphic design, but let me help make it easier for you. There are a few places where you can use someone else's designs to create your book cover or you can hire someone to design a custom one for you. Let's check out the list.
- Canva.com Canva offers your e-book template designs created by their team, and other freelance graphic designers, that you can re-create and use. Most of them are free but others may require payment.
- PosterMyWall.com On PosterMyWall, you can also find e-book templates created for you to manipulate for your own e-book. You can use all of them for free, but PosterMyWall will add a watermark to your image. So, it's best to just buy your book cover from here.
- Fiverr.com Many people use Fiverr to hire freelancers in graphic design for multiple projects. They have plenty that will love to help with your new e-book cover. Some of them you can ask to create you a custom cover for just $5, hence the name Fiverr!
Step 6
Get Your E-Book Formatted For Reading On Devices.
There are many different devices out now that can help you read e-books, but they don't all take the same format (or file type). You should get your book formatted in all file types so that way your book can reach more eyes. The most popular formats for an e-book are PDF, MOBI & EPUB. These formats should create it so that your book can be read online and on all major devices. You can then sell your book on many different stages like Audible and more.
Don't know how to do it? Head over to Fiverr.com (remember them?), Freelancer.com, or UpWork.com to hire an independent talent that can help you get that done in no time.
